Problems building gems on Windows

If you use Ruby on Windows you’re probably quite familiar with this error message

Building native extensions. This could take a while...
ERROR: Error installing gem-name:
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

It’s not that it’s impossible to solve but for the uninitiated, installing and configuring the necessary compilers can be a real pain… Until now!

Today i discovered that the guys over at rubyinstaller.org have a DevKit which contains the necessary tools, packaged in a handy archive.

In their words…

Rather than directing you to the MinGW site and telling you which packages to install, we’ve bundled the required pieces into a single archive so that you can conveniently enable your RubyInstaller installation to build many native C extensions.

Download it here! Page has been moved to here!
